The Vinland Saga Manga Complete Collection — What’s Available Right Now
If you’re looking to own a Vinland Saga manga complete collection in English, here’s the most important thing to know: no English edition has published its final volume yet.
Makoto Yukimura’s Vinland Saga finished in July 2025. The manga ran for 20 years — new chapters were published monthly in a Japanese magazine, then collected into book-format volumes. The final Japanese volume, number 29, came out in September 2025. The story of Thorfinn’s journey from child soldier to pacifist explorer is done, and it’s one of the greatest manga ever completed.
English editions work differently from the Japanese originals. Instead of publishing each Japanese volume as a separate book, the English publisher Kodansha USA combines multiple Japanese volumes into single, larger hardcover books. This format is called an omnibus — “2-in-1” means two Japanese volumes in one English book, “3-in-1” means three. Because of this, the English volume numbers don’t match the Japanese ones, which can get confusing fast.
If you’ve seen box sets or listings advertising “Vinland Saga Volumes 1–13,” those contain the first 13 English hardcover books. Since each one combines two Japanese volumes, those 13 books cover Japanese volumes 1 through 26 out of 29. That’s most of the story, but not all of it — you’d still be missing the final three Japanese volumes’ worth of content.
Two English editions exist, and both are still catching up to the completed Japanese series. Understanding the difference between them is the single most important thing before you spend your money.
Two English Editions of Vinland Saga — Standard vs. Deluxe
Both editions are hardcover omnibus formats — multiple Japanese volumes combined into each English book. They differ in size, how many Japanese volumes each book collects, bonus content, and how close they are to being finished.
Standard Hardcover (2-in-1 Omnibus)
This is the original English collector’s edition, first published in October 2013. Each volume combines two Japanese volumes into one hardcover book. When complete, the series will be 15 volumes total.
As of now, 14 of 15 volumes are published. Volume 14 (covering Japanese volumes 27–28) came out in May 2025. Only Volume 15 remains — it covers the final Japanese volume 29 and is scheduled for October 6, 2026.
The big draw here is the Volumes 1–13 box set, which lets you grab the bulk of the series in a single purchase. The box set is typically cheaper than buying all 13 volumes individually, so compare pricing on both options before you order. Add Volume 14 and eventually Volume 15, and you’ll own the complete story.

Deluxe Edition (3-in-1 Omnibus)
The Deluxe Edition started in February 2024 and is the newer, premium option. Each volume combines three Japanese volumes into an oversized 7″×10″ hardcover — noticeably taller and wider than the standard edition — with leather-patterned covers and stamped Norse runes on the spine.
Beyond the larger format, the Deluxe books include bonus content that has never been published in English before: full-color illustrations, interviews with Makoto Yukimura, maps, concept art, and behind-the-scenes details from the creation of the series.
The Deluxe Edition will be approximately 10 volumes when complete. As of September 2025, 8 volumes are published — Deluxe Vol 8 (covering Japanese volumes 22–24) released in September 2025. Volumes 9 and 10 have been listed by retailers but have no release dates announced yet.

Which Edition Should You Collect?
Both editions contain the same story — identical translation, identical chapters. The difference is packaging, bonus content, and timeline. Here’s a straightforward comparison:
| Standard Hardcover | Deluxe Edition | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | 2-in-1 omnibus | 3-in-1 oversized omnibus (7″×10″) |
| Total Volumes | 15 | ~10 |
| Published So Far | 14 of 15 | 8 of ~10 |
| Bonus Content | No | Yes — color art, interviews, maps, concept art |
| Box Set Available | Yes (Vols 1–13) | No |
| Expected Completion | October 2026 | Likely 2026–2027 |
Go with the Standard Hardcover if you want to start reading the full story as soon as possible. It’s 14 of 15 volumes done, the box set makes buying in bulk easy, and you’ll only need one more volume to complete everything. It’s also the more budget-friendly option — compare the total cost of the box set plus two additional volumes against 10 individual Deluxe volumes to see the difference.
Go with the Deluxe Edition if you love premium manga editions and the physical object matters as much as the story. The oversized format, leather-patterned covers, and exclusive bonus content make these genuinely special collector’s items. You’ll just need to be patient — the final two volumes don’t have release dates yet.
What about mixing editions? You can, since both contain the same story content. But the Deluxe volumes are noticeably larger than the Standard ones, so they won’t line up neatly on a shelf together. If how they look on display matters to you, pick one and stick with it.

What’s in Each Volume — Arc and Content Guide
Vinland Saga spans four major story arcs — distinct narrative sections, each with its own focus and setting — across its 29 Japanese volumes. Knowing what each English volume covers helps you understand where you are in the story and which volumes you still need.
The Four Arcs of Vinland Saga
War Arc / Prologue (Japanese Volumes 1–8): Young Thorfinn witnesses his father’s murder by the Viking mercenary Askeladd and joins his band, driven by a single-minded desire for revenge. This arc is brutal, action-heavy, and establishes the historical world of 11th-century Scandinavia and England. Adapted into Anime Season 1.
Slave Arc (Japanese Volumes 8–14): After the events of the War Arc, Thorfinn hits rock bottom and is sold into slavery on a Danish farm. Stripped of his weapons and purpose, he slowly begins to question violence and find a new reason to live. This is where Vinland Saga transforms from a Viking action story into something much deeper. Adapted into Anime Season 2.
Eastern Expedition Arc (Japanese Volumes 14–23): Thorfinn, now committed to building a peaceful settlement in the lands west of Greenland, needs money and resources. He joins a trading expedition to Greece — and faces the question of whether his pacifist ideals can survive the real world. Not yet adapted into anime.
Vinland Arc / Final Arc (Japanese Volumes 24–29): The journey to North America and the conclusion of Thorfinn’s lifelong quest. Everything the story has been building toward. Not yet adapted into anime.

When Will the Final English Volumes Be Released?
Here’s where things stand for each edition’s remaining volumes:
Standard Hardcover Vol 15 (the final volume, covering Japanese volume 29) is scheduled for October 6, 2026. This is the only volume remaining in this edition. Once it’s out, the standard hardcover will be fully complete.
Deluxe Vol 9 (covering Japanese volumes 25–27) has been listed by retailers but has no official release date announced yet. Deluxe Vol 10 (covering Japanese volumes 28–29, the final Deluxe volume) is also awaiting an official date. Based on the Deluxe Edition’s release pace so far — roughly one volume every two to three months — a reasonable estimate is that the Deluxe Edition will be fully complete sometime in 2026 or early 2027.
Pre-ordering the final volumes is worth considering — you’ll lock in the price and secure a copy on release day, which matters for popular manga that can temporarily sell out at launch. Check Amazon or other major book retailers for pre-order availability; they’ll typically let you place an order as soon as a release date is confirmed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Vinland Saga really finished?
Yes. Makoto Yukimura published the final chapter (Chapter 220) on July 25, 2025, in Monthly Afternoon, a Japanese manga magazine. The final Japanese volume (Volume 29) was released on September 22, 2025. After 20 years, the story is complete.
Are the “Volumes 1–13” box sets actually “complete”?
No — and this is one of the most common points of confusion. The box set contains the first 13 English standard hardcover volumes. Because each English volume combines two Japanese volumes, those 13 books cover Japanese volumes 1 through 26 — that’s 26 out of 29 Japanese volumes. You’ll need to buy Volume 14 (released May 2025) and Volume 15 (releasing October 2026) separately to have the entire manga.
Can I read the ending right now in English?
Not in print. The final standard hardcover volume releases in October 2026. Digital chapters may become available earlier through Kodansha’s digital platforms or storefronts like Amazon Kindle and Apple Books, but the collected print volume is still over a year away.
Does the anime cover the whole manga?
Not even close. The anime is an adaptation of the manga — the manga is the original work, and the anime retells the story in animated form. Seasons 1 and 2 cover the War Arc and Slave Arc, roughly chapters 1 through 99 out of 220 total. That’s about the first half of the story. Season 1 was produced by the animation studio WIT Studio (2019) and Season 2 by MAPPA (2023). No Season 3 has been announced. Both seasons are available on Netflix. If you’ve watched the anime and want to continue in the manga, start at English Standard Hardcover Volume 8 or Deluxe Volume 5 — the anime ends right where those volumes begin, so you can pick up from page one without skipping or re-reading anything.
Should I wait until every volume is out before buying?
That’s really up to you, but there’s no strong reason to wait. The vast majority of the story is already available in English — 14 of 15 standard hardcover volumes are published, covering 28 of 29 Japanese volumes. If you start now, you’ll have over 5,000 pages across 14 volumes to read before you catch up to what’s unreleased. And honestly, once you start Vinland Saga, you won’t want to stop.
