How Many Vinland Saga Manga Volumes Are There?
There are 29 Vinland Saga manga volumes in the original Japanese edition, spanning 220 chapters. In English, the series is published by Kodansha USA in two formats: a 2-in-1 hardcover edition (15 books) and a Deluxe 3-in-1 edition (10 books estimated). Both formats are also available digitally.
Good news if you’ve been waiting to start: Vinland Saga is complete. The manga finished in July 2025 after a 20-year run by creator Makoto Yukimura, so you can read the entire story from start to finish without worrying about cliffhangers or indefinite hiatuses. The one catch: the final English 2-in-1 volume (Volume 15) doesn’t release until October 2026, so there’s a short wait for the very last book in print.
Here are the key numbers:
- 29 volumes in the original Japanese edition
- 220 chapters total (chapters are individual installments collected into volumes)
- Written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura
- Began serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine in April 2005, then moved to Monthly Afternoon in December 2005, continuing until July 2025
- Final chapter (#220, “Somewhere Not Here”) published July 25, 2025
You’ll still see some retailers listing Vinland Saga as “ongoing” — that’s outdated information. The series is fully complete in Japan, and the English editions are nearly finished too.
Vinland Saga English Editions Explained
This is where things get a little confusing if you’re shopping for the first time. There are two different English editions, and they have completely different volume numbering. In Japan, each volume is a smaller book. English publishers combine multiple Japanese volumes into larger books, which changes the numbering. The story content and translation are the same — it’s just the packaging that differs.
Important before you shop: don’t mix volume numbers between editions. “Volume 5” in the 2-in-1 edition covers Japanese Volumes 9–10, while “Deluxe 5” covers Japanese Volumes 13–15 — completely different chapter ranges. Pick one edition and stick with it to avoid ordering the wrong book.
Here’s a quick comparison:
| Feature | 2-in-1 Hardcover | Deluxe 3-in-1 |
|---|---|---|
| Japanese vols per book | 2 | 3 |
| Total books | 15 | 10 (estimated) |
| Pages per book | ~400 | ~688 |
| Price per book | ~$19.99 | ~$54.99 |
| Bonus content | Standard | Interviews, exclusive art |
| Status | 14 of 15 released | 8 released, ongoing |
2-in-1 Hardcover Edition (15 Books Total)
This is the standard English release and the one most readers own. Each hardcover book combines two Japanese volumes into roughly 400 pages. Kodansha USA has been publishing this edition since 2013, and it’s nearly complete.
As of mid-2025, 14 of the 15 books are available. The final book (Volume 15, which collects Japanese Volumes 28–29) is scheduled for October 6, 2026. That means you can read about 97% of the story right now in this format.
The best deal for new readers is the Volumes 1–13 box set, which gets you everything from the beginning through Japanese Volume 26 — that’s the vast majority of the series in a single purchase.
Vinland Saga Manga Set, Volumes 1-13
Deluxe 3-in-1 Edition (The Collector’s Choice)
If you love shelf-worthy manga, the Deluxe edition is gorgeous. These are oversized hardcovers (7×10″) with faux-leather binding and embossed Viking-era symbols on the cover. Each book collects three Japanese volumes — roughly 688 pages of manga per book.
Beyond the premium build quality, the Deluxe editions include exclusive cover art, creator interviews, and behind-the-scenes content that hasn’t appeared in any other English release. They’re a genuinely different product from the standard hardcovers.
Here’s how the Deluxe volumes map to the Japanese releases:
- Deluxe 1 — Japanese Volumes 1–3 (February 2024)
- Deluxe 2 — Japanese Volumes 4–6
- Deluxe 3 — Japanese Volumes 7–9
- Deluxe 4 — Japanese Volumes 10–12
- Deluxe 5 — Japanese Volumes 13–15
- Deluxe 6 — Japanese Volumes 16–18
- Deluxe 7 — Japanese Volumes 19–21
- Deluxe 8 — Japanese Volumes 22–24 (September 2025)
Japanese Volumes 25–29 are still to come in future Deluxe releases. So if you go the Deluxe route, be aware that you’ll be waiting a while to own the complete story in this format.
At ~$54.99 per volume versus ~$19.99 for the standard hardcover, the Deluxe edition costs significantly more. But if you’ve handled one in person, you know where that money goes — these are beautiful books.
Which Edition Is Right for You?
Go with the 2-in-1 hardcovers if you want to start reading now and get through (almost) the entire series right away. They’re still hardcover, still great quality, and much easier on the wallet.
Go with the Deluxe editions if Vinland Saga is a series you already love and want to collect in the most premium format possible. The bonus content and craftsmanship make them worth it for fans — but the full set won’t be complete for a while.
Which Manga Volumes Does the Anime Cover?
If you came to Vinland Saga through the anime and want to keep going in the manga, this section maps exactly where each season starts and stops. The anime adapts the manga faithfully with very little skipped content, so transitioning from screen to page is smooth.
Season 1 (War Arc) — Volumes 1 Through 4
The first anime season (24 episodes, produced by Wit Studio, 2019) covers Chapters 1–54, which is the entire War Arc — also called the Prologue. In the English 2-in-1 hardcovers, that’s Volumes 1 through 4.
If you’re collecting the Deluxe editions, Season 1 falls within Deluxe Volumes 1–3 (though Deluxe 3 extends a bit past where the anime ends).
The season finale adapts Chapter 54, which is literally titled “End of the Prologue.” Yes — everything in Season 1, all that action and drama, is just the setup. The story has a lot more to say.
Season 2 (Slave Arc) — Volumes 4 Through 7
Season 2 (24 episodes, produced by MAPPA, 2023) covers Chapters 55–100, which is the Slave Arc and the very beginning of the Eastern Expedition Arc. In the 2-in-1 hardcovers, that’s Volumes 4 through 7.
In the Deluxe editions, Season 2 is covered by Deluxe Volumes 3–5.
You’ll notice Volume 4 appears in both Season 1 and Season 2’s ranges — that’s because the War Arc ends and the Slave Arc begins within the same book.
Vinland Saga Vol. 2 (2-in-1 Hardcover)
After the Anime — Start at Volume 8
If you’ve watched both seasons and want to continue the story in manga, pick up English 2-in-1 hardcover Volume 8. That’s Chapter 101 onward — the beginning of the Eastern Expedition Arc.
Here’s something that might surprise you: roughly 60% of Vinland Saga hasn’t been adapted into anime yet. The Eastern Expedition and Vinland arcs together span about 120 chapters across Volumes 8–15. There’s a huge amount of story waiting for you.
Because the anime follows the manga so closely, you won’t miss any important context by jumping straight to Volume 8. There’s no need to re-read volumes the anime already covered (unless you want to — the art is stunning).
All Four Story Arcs by Volume
Vinland Saga tells one continuous story across four major arcs — think of arcs as the big story sections, each with its own setting and focus. Together they track Thorfinn’s transformation from a revenge-driven child warrior into something very different. Here’s how they break down in the English 2-in-1 hardcover edition:
War Arc / Prologue (Volumes 1–4 | Chapters 1–54)
Young Thorfinn joins the Viking mercenary band led by Askeladd, driven by a single-minded desire to avenge his father’s death. The arc is set against the Danish invasion of England under King Sweyn, and it’s packed with brutal combat, political scheming, and one of the best mentor-enemy dynamics in manga.
Don’t let the “Prologue” label fool you — this arc stands on its own as a gripping Viking war story. But it ends with a turning point that completely redefines what Vinland Saga is about.
Slave Arc (Volumes 4–7 | Chapters 55–99)
Thorfinn loses everything — his purpose, his freedom, his identity — and is sold into slavery on a farm in Denmark. It’s a radical shift from the action of the War Arc. The pace slows down, the violence recedes, and the story becomes about atonement, labor, and whether a person can truly change.
This is where Vinland Saga introduces Einar, a fellow slave who becomes one of the story’s most important characters. It’s also the arc that divides readers: some find it slow after the War Arc’s intensity, while others consider it the heart of the entire series. (If you loved Season 2 of the anime, you already know which camp you’re in.)
Volume 4 bridges both arcs — the War Arc ends and the Slave Arc begins within the same book.
Eastern Expedition Arc (Volumes 7–12 | Chapters 100–166)
With the Slave Arc behind him, Thorfinn gathers a crew and sets out on a trading voyage east toward Greece. The goal: earn enough money to buy land in the west and establish a peaceful settlement — the Vinland of the title.
At 67 chapters, this is the longest arc in the series. It expands the cast significantly and puts Thorfinn’s pacifist ideals to the test in increasingly difficult situations. The Eastern Expedition is where the story asks: can you hold onto non-violence when the world keeps giving you reasons to fight?
Vinland Arc / Final Arc (Volumes 12–15 | Chapters 167–220)
The crew finally sails west. After hundreds of chapters of war, slavery, and grueling journeys, the story arrives where the title has been pointing all along — Vinland, the new world.
This arc wraps up Thorfinn’s 20-year character arc and the series’ central themes about violence, peace, and what it means to be a true warrior. The final chapter was published on July 25, 2025.
Best Way to Buy Vinland Saga Manga
Here’s a quick recommendation depending on where you’re starting from:
Brand new to Vinland Saga? The Volumes 1–13 box set is the best value by far. It gets you from the very beginning through Japanese Volume 26 — that’s the War Arc, the Slave Arc, the full Eastern Expedition Arc, and most of the Vinland Arc. Then grab Volume 14 separately, and pick up Volume 15 when it releases in October 2026.
Watched Season 1 only? Start at Volume 5 for the Slave Arc. If you want a little overlap with the anime’s ending to ease the transition, start at Volume 4 instead.
Watched both seasons? Start at Volume 8. That’s where the unadapted manga begins, and you’ve got roughly 60% of the story ahead of you.
Vinland Saga Vol. 14 (2-in-1 Hardcover)
Want the premium experience? The Deluxe editions are beautiful, but know that the full set won’t be finished for a while. If you’re patient and love collector’s editions, they’re absolutely worth it. If you want to read the whole story now, go with the standard 2-in-1 hardcovers — they’re still excellent quality books, and you don’t lose any story content.
However you choose to read it, Vinland Saga is one of those series that rewards you for sticking with it. The fact that it’s finished makes this the perfect time to start — no more monthly waits, no more wondering if the ending will stick the landing. It’s all here, and honestly? Just grab Volume 1 and see for yourself.
